Do You Know ...

Some sex toy materials and lubricant ingredients may be toxic?

We are bombarded with messages about the harmful effects that foods, medications and supplements may have on our health. Paying attention to what you eat and drink is an important step in protecting your overall well-being.  However, your skin absorbs and is affected by the products that you use, so it's important to know about the ingredients in your lubricants and sex toys.

At Primrose Path, we prefer to be cautious while maintaining high standards for quality and effectiveness.  We aren’t scientists, but we would like to help you make educated choices.

What Are Phthalates?

Listen!

Listen to Sharon Kramper, Owner of Primrose Path, talk about Phthalates

Phthalates (pronounced THAY-lates) are a chemical compound added to plastic to make it soft and flexible.  They are commonly used in the production of sex toys to provide a realistic feel.

Minimally, sex toys that contain phthalates can cause sensitivity and irritation when used on delicate tissues.

More seriously, studies have shown that high levels of phthalate exposure can lead to endocrine system disruption - that means problems with your hormones.  Hormones affect many areas of your body, including your metabolism.

Although it's difficult to say exactly how damaging phthalates may be, North American and European countries have taken steps to ban their use in children's toys -  but not in adult toys.

All of the toy products - vibrators, dildos, strokers - in the Primrose Path catalog and on the website are phthalate-free.

What Are Parabens?

Parabens are chemical preservatives used widely throughout the beauty industry.  You can find them in your toothpaste, shampoo, conditioner, moisturizer, shave gel, lipstick and personal lubricants.

Published studies have suggested that once parabens have been absorbed through the skin, they act like the hormone estrogen, which is known to play a role in the development of breast cancers.  It’s possible that parabens may become more dangerous the more you are exposed to them, and may:

  • Alter the estrogen process among women, increasing the tendency of developing estrogen-dependent diseases like breast tumors
  • Heighten existing allergic reactions
  • Decrease sperm cell count among males
  • Cause problems to fetal development for pregnant women

Information provided by Intimate Organics

Primrose Path offers products from Earthly Body, Sliquid and Intimate Organics which are all paraben-free.

What about Glycerine?

Listen!

Listen to owner, Sharon Kramper, talk about why glycerine is a danger to your loveplay!

Glycerine is related to glucose (i.e. sugar).  It's regularly added to flavored personal lubricants to sweeten them.  However, when used vaginally, glycerine can cause yeast infections because sugar is food for yeast!

Primrose Path carries flavored lubricants from Sliquid that are glycerine-free.
